The set of points of the model is the set of points strictly inside a given circle. Points and lines are the basic objects of geometry, so, to describe the Poincaré disk model, we must first describe the set of points and lines of the model. Given any line and any point not on, there are at least two distinct lines through that are parallel to. The Poincaré disk model, one of Beltrami’s models, is a model for hyperbolic geometry, in which the Parallel Postulate is replaced by the following statement: Non-Euclidean geometries began to be seriously investigated in the 19th century Beltrami, working in the context of Euclidean geometry, was the first to actually produce models of non-Euclidean geometry, thus proving that, supposing Euclidean geometry is consistent, then so is non-Euclidean geometry. Ī non-Euclidean geometry is a geometry that satisfies the first four postulates of Euclid but fails to satisfy the Parallel Postulate. Given any line and any point not on, there is exactly one line through that is parallel to. To refresh our memories, here is an equivalent form of the Parallel Postulate, known as Playfair’s Axiom: The fifth, known as the Parallel Postulate (recall also that two lines are parallel if they do not intersect), is unsatisfyingly complex and non-immediate. The first four of these postulates are simple and self-evident. Recall from our previous post that a Euclidean geometry is a geometry satisfying Euclid’s five postulates. The Poincaré disk model, which was actually put forth by Eugenio Beltrami, is one of the first and, to my mind, most elegant models of non-Euclidean geometry. ‘My physical body is living on a Poincaré disk model for hyperbolic geometry, which my mind has somehow transcended during this out-of-body experience. ![]() You puzzle things over for a few seconds before having a moment of insight. On this particular sunday, it filled up by 11 am. Another excellent dish was the fried shrimp turnover. The wo kwok (fried taro) was pretty good, as was the shu mai (pork dumpling). Excellent were the small baked pork buns and the chive dumplings. Maybe it sat too long in the serving cart. Also, consistency was a small problem - our first serving of shrimp dumpling was truly excellent (5.0), and so we order a second order - which was a shadow (3.5 maybe) of the first order. What made the experience less than 5.0 was perhaps its over-reliance on white pepper or some similar spice that was apparent in many of the dim sum dishes. It is as good as many top quality dim sum places in. Just a shade lower in quality than Koi Palace in DC and the HK Lounge I in SF, this place deserves a try if you are in the area, like I was recently. ![]()

To get the aszú, which is what most people mean when they talk about Tokaji wine and was believed by historical giants, the grapes are left on the vine in long, humid summers until they develop noble rot. Cheaper than its Hungarian counterpart, Slovak Tokaji Aszú is made from a combination of the only three grapes permissible to grow in the region’s volcanic soil: Furmint, Lipovina and Yellow Muscat. Why exactly has this wine been the center of so much adoration and strife? For one, it’s just flat-out delicious (it also generally has an alcohol content of 14%, so more bang for your buck). Though Slovak Tokaj is one of the smallest wine regions worldwide, it’s considered an “ undiscovered jewel” among wine enthusiasts, dotted with small vineyards and free of tourists found in popular French and Italian wine destinations. Slovakia pushed back and now can use the Tokaj name as long as it applies to certain standards (after much controversy and plagiarism, only approved countries can use the title) and, in 2009, increased its total growing area to 908 hectares. Thankfully, that deal has since dissolved but the country fell behind its Tokaj neighbor, which received foreign investments and the ensuing prestige. In what was formerly Communist Czechoslovakia, now Slovakia, the right to trademark wine as Tokay was sacrificed in order to export beer to Hungary. During the Communist regime in the 20th century, focus in both Tokaj regions shifted from quality to quantity. Slovakia was granted a 565-hectare area for Tokaj, compared to Hungary’s about 5,400, but the once-prized vino soon faced a new threat: Communism. In 1920, however, the region was split between northeastern Hungary and southeastern Slovakia after the Treaty of Trianon (for non-history buffs, this formally ended World War I between the majority of the Allies and the Kingdom of Hungary). In the 18th century, it reached its peak and inspired many copycats across the world. The former Tokaj-Hegylja region is one of the world’s most popular wine areas with beginnings in Roman times. If you’re familiar with the sweet, golden-hued wine, you might know of its Hungarian growing region, which has overshadowed its Slovakian counterpart for years. France’s Louis XIV famously declared that tokaji aszú, the one that comes to mind when mentioning Tokaji, was the “ wine of kings, king of wines.” No wonder: centuries ago, tokaji wine, or Tokay, was the thing to drink, winning the dedication of monarchs, writers, and composers – fans included Emperor Franz Josef, Voltaire and Beethoven. Some battles are fought over land, some over bruised egos, and some, in the case of Tokaj, over wine. ![]() 9/17/2023 0 Comments Oxygen electrons![]() ![]() This is when he noticed certain types of elements regularly appearing and noticed a correlation between atomic weight and chemical properties.īut the exact Eureka! moment that led Mendeleev to the sorting strategy that produced his complete periodic table is shrouded in mystery. So according to the Royal Society of Chemistry, Mendeleev wrote the properties of each element on cards, and then he started ordering them by increasing atomic weight. But they weren't enough to usefully sort the 55 additional chemical elements known at the time. Gordin in his book "A Well-Ordered Thing: Dmitrii Mendeleev and the Shadow of the Periodic Table" (Princeton University Press, Revised Edition 2018). The first section of Mendeleev's book dealt with just eight of the known elements - carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine, fluorine, bromine and iodine - and those two strategies worked for those particular elements, according to Michael D. Just two strategies existed at the time to categorize these elements: separating them into metals and nonmetals or grouping them by an element's number of valence electrons (or those electrons in the outermost shell). At the time, there were 63 known chemical elements, each with an atomic weight calculated using Avogadro's hypothesis, which states that equal volumes of gases, when kept at the same temperature and pressure, hold the same number of molecules. ![]() Putting the elements in any kind of order would prove quite difficult. (Image credit: Oxford Science Archive/Print Collector/Getty Images) For instance, all the group 18 elements are inert gases, meaning they don't react with any other elements. Elements that occupy the same column on the periodic table (called a "group") have identical valence electron configurations and consequently behave in a similar fashion chemically. As an example, elements in Group 8A (or VIIIA) all have a full set of eight electrons in the highest-energy orbital, according to chemist William Reusch, on his webpage at Michigan State University. The columns, or groups, on the periodic table represent the atomic elements that have the same number of valence electrons, or those electrons in the outermost orbital shell. (Atoms have protons and neutrons in their nucleus, and surrounding that, they have their electrons arranged in orbitals, where an atomic orbital is a math term that describes the location of an electron as well as its wave-like behavior.)įor instance, period 1 includes elements that have one atomic orbital where electrons spin period 2 has two atomic orbitals, period 3 has three and so on up to period 7. The horizontal rows on the periodic table are called periods, where each period number indicates the number of orbitals for the elements in that row, according to Los Alamos National Laboratory. ![]() ![]() ![]() And you have to wake up when you are barely 10-15 minutes into the cycle again.
